When migraine repeatedly arrives around a period, knowing the pattern does not necessarily make the attack easier. But it does raise a useful question: could treatment be planned around that window?
That is what makes this research interesting to me.
What happened in LUNA?
On 10 September 2026, AbbVie announced results from a Phase 3 trial involving 468 adult women with menstrual migraine. They were assigned by chance to atogepant or placebo. Atogepant is an oral medicine that blocks the CGRP receptor, part of a signalling pathway involved in migraine. [1]
The study used treatment for seven consecutive days, beginning three days before expected menstruation, across three cycles. That describes the research, not a schedule to copy or a reason to change prescribed treatment.
Migraine days around menstruation fell by an average of 1.20 days with atogepant and 0.40 days with placebo. The additional reduction was therefore 0.80 days in that window, averaged across the three cycles. [1]
What does part of a day mean to someone?
It does not mean each woman gained exactly the same amount of time, or that everyone had an attack-free period. Averages bring different experiences together.
I would also want to know what happened to work, plans and caring responsibilities. Those are the things a migraine day can contain.
A clinician can help distinguish attacks that cluster around periods from attacks throughout the month. Recognising a pattern is a starting point for care, not a treatment plan by itself.
What do we still need to see?
AbbVie reported no new safety concerns, but its announcement did not include detailed side-effect rates. This is a manufacturer’s initial report, not the complete peer-reviewed paper, and the company has a commercial interest. [1]
A positive result also does not make this exact schedule approved or available everywhere. Local options and individual suitability need checking.
This is one particular CGRP-targeted medicine. It is not evidence that peptides generally prevent migraine.
Bringing your pattern to an appointment
You could ask whether a diary of migraine days, periods and current treatments would help, what prevention options fit your history and how benefit and side effects would be reviewed.
If your cycle is changing, mention that too. A plan needs to fit your life, not depend on your body following a perfect calendar.
